‘Yet we must find joy in her rages
She comes in sun or darkness
And total surrender is the only
Resource that lasts in her.
Whether I lose or win,
Love remains my only good
In her alone my fullness rests.’
Hadewijch
Spiritual Direction is an age-old companionship practice on the often-lonely path of living a spiritual life. Spiritual Direction provides deep and non-judgemental listening with a view to encouraging exploration of your emotions, events and relationships, your life journey. A Spiritual Director is a companion on the road, who reflects your explorations and acknowledges your journey’s invitations, awakening new possibilities, connections, deeper meaning and compassion. Spiritual Direction is for those who are seeking to grow and explore their inner life, discover union in the Presence and develop clarity in response to the world. Spiritual Direction can help you discern the link between contemplative living and action.
For some directees with a practice of contemplative prayer, a spiritual companion can awaken your attunement to Presence and help deepen your relationship with the Divine.
In any case, Spiritual Direction fosters a contemplative stance in both director and directee that supports greater depth, freedom and growth in both director and directee.
‘If to be free is the most important goal of all … then to help someone else to be free or become free must be the most sublime and rewarding of all human endeavours.’
Elie Weisel, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
Spiritual Direction is not psychological counselling or life coaching. It is not a place to get advice about a problem or practical skills to solve it. It’s certainly not religious proselytizing or preaching.
